Connecticut Census Information (1790 and 1830)
Compiled by Thomas Thurston
These tables document the total population, the numbers of free
people of color, and the numbers of
slaves in the eight counties of Connecticut
recorded in the U.S. censuses of 1790
and 1830. The U.S. Constitution requires that a national census be
taken every ten years to apportion representation to the different
states. Historians have found census data to be an extremely important
resource for identifying population shifts and trends. The online
United States Historical Census Data Browser, at http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/collections/stats/histcensus/,
allows the user to select specific
census categories and allows users
to find data at the county level, when
that data is available. Census information is available for all the
U.S. censuses from 1790 to 1960.
