Our Mission and Process

The CMI2 develops leading-edge media and courseware for teaching and learning at Yale, and oversees the deployment of Yale's next-generation online learning environment, Classes*v2.

Our mission is to promote innovative and effective uses of technology and new media to enhance learning, both on-campus and outside of Yale.

Situated within the ITS Academic Media & Technology group, the CMI2 has four primary areas of concentration:

  • Partner with Yale faculty on the development of innovative learning activities and environments for on-campus coursework
  • Oversee the deployment and ongoing development of Classes*v2, an online learning and collaboration environment built on the Sakai platform
  • Design and produce learning materials to be shared with off-campus audiences, as part of Yale's global educational mission
  • Consult with Yale departments and groups on effective information architecture, user interface design, and media outreach, on a per-project basis.

We welcome ideas for projects that significantly enhance the learning experiences of Yale students and explore innovative pedagogical approaches. Our projects are typically digitally based (web, video, audio) with an emphasis on student and instructor interaction and thoughtful visual design. Projects meeting these criteria may be eligible for in-kind funding, and proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Please contact our Usability and Client Relations manager Miriam Schroers (miriam.schroers@yale.edu) with a brief description of your ideas or teaching challenge. In our preliminary review we will determine if your idea fits within our skill set and production guidelines, or if other support venues may better meet your goals.

The CMI2 will also consider projects developed for off-campus audiences (e.g., Yale alumni/ae, non-Yale students) provided that the project's goals connect with Yale's educational mission. Projects in this category will be quoted and charged back based on the scope of work.

Should you work with CMI2, we will begin with a series of exploratory conversations that will lead to a project charter, which describes:

  • The project’s main pedagogical goals
  • A proposed development direction and schedule
  • Any fees associated with project development
  • Primary roles and responsibilities for the production process.

All projects undergo rigorous quality assurance and usability testing. Our production model ensures that completed projects can be supported within the current technology framework of the University and, whenever possible, may be sustained by the project owner.

Assessment and evaluation of the product’s success in meeting primary learning goals is an important part of our development process, and we will work with you to determine the best methods of capturing usage data and learners’ feedback during the initial release.
